Speedup Potential of Climate-Based Daylight Modelling on GPUs

چکیده
Architects must consider an entire year's worth of solar positions and climate data to design buildings with adequate daylight and minimal glare. However, annual simulations are time-consuming and computationally expensive, which makes them difficult to integrate into iterative design processes. In this paper, we compare the performance of several RADIANCE-based dynamic daylighting simulation methods, DAYSIM and the threeand five-phase methods and, perhaps more importantly, the potential to speed them up using parallel implementations on graphic processors. Using a model of a generic office, we achieve speedups of ten times with DAYSIM and twenty-five times with the five-phase method. Parallel implementations of threeand five-phase methods provide better scaling to multi-GPU environments and more accurate results for complex fenestration systems than parallelized DAYSIM.

An approach to Improve Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm Using CUDA
The time consumption in solving computationally heavy problems has always been a concern for computer programmers. Due to simplicity of its implementation, the PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) is a suitable meta-heuristic algorithm for solving computationally heavy problems. However, despite the simplicity, the algorithm is inefficient for solving real computationally heavy problems but the pr...
متن کاملEnergy consumption of atria; the case of a commercial-office center in the semi-arid climate of Tehran
According to the energy crisis in the world, optimization of energy consumption is indispensable. Technological advances in constructions and application of renewable energy resources demand saving energy. Atrium, as one of the construction elements, catches sufficient daylight and acts as a passive solar element and results in a decline of energy consumption. This research seeks to evalu...
متن کاملApplying Climate-based Daylight Modeling (cbdm) for a Macro Scale Master Plan Design Case Study: the Great City in China
Climate-Based Daylight Modelling (CBDM) is a methodology that allows the prediction of several measures of daylight using the sky condition from location specific meteorological data. CBDM was originally used as a means for predicting indoor daylight availability and intensity. Since the scalability of the method has been proved it has been applied at different architectural scales for differen...
متن کاملModelling potential impacts of climate change on the oak spatial distribution (Case study: Ilam and Lorestan provinces)
Examining the effects of climate change on the oak spatial distribution, as the main species of Zagros forests and its ecological and economic values is of significant importance. Here, we used species distribution models for simulating current climatic suitability of oak and its potential changes in 2050 and 2070. For this purpose, five regression-based and machine learning approaches, four cl...
